Why GIFs are still useful

GIF is an old format with real drawbacks: no audio, a limited palette, and files far larger than an equivalent video. It survives because it plays absolutely everywhere, autoplays without a tap, loops without controls, and can be pasted into chat windows, issue trackers and documentation where video embeds are not supported.

This converter turns a short clip into a looping GIF locally, using ffmpeg in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

The two settings that matter

Length and frame rate dominate file size. Two to eight seconds is the useful range for most GIFs; beyond that the file grows faster than the useful information does. Dropping from 24 frames per second to 12 roughly halves the file and is barely noticeable in a short loop, and going to 10 is often indistinguishable at small display sizes.

Audio is dropped automatically, which is not a limitation but the nature of the format.

When a GIF is the wrong choice

For anything longer than about ten seconds, or anything where quality matters, a short MP4 is dramatically smaller and sharper. GIF's 256 colour limit also makes gradients, skin tones and smooth shadows band visibly, so it is a poor fit for photographic footage.

A reasonable rule: use GIF for UI interactions, short loops and documentation, and use video for anything that looks like a film.

Quick tips

  • Keep clips 2-8 seconds for snappy GIF previews.
  • Lower FPS for smaller files; higher FPS for smoother motion.
  • Audio is removed automatically to keep GIFs light.

Next step: turn a still photo into video

Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
