How the palette is sampled

The image is drawn to a small canvas, its pixels are read, and the colours are grouped so the dominant ones rise to the top. Sampling from a downscaled copy is deliberate: it keeps a 40 megapixel photo fast to analyse and stops one noisy corner from dominating the result. All of it runs locally, so brand assets and unreleased artwork are never uploaded.

You get hex codes you can paste straight into a stylesheet or a design token file.

Reading a palette you extracted

Extracted colours are a starting point, not a finished system. A photograph's dominant colours are photographic: they carry the lighting and mood of that specific image, which is often the opposite of what a usable interface palette needs. Treat the output as evidence of what the image contains, then choose accessible pairings deliberately.

Check contrast before shipping. A colour pair that looks pleasant in a swatch row can still fail readability thresholds for body text, and an extracted accent used as a button label colour may have nowhere near enough contrast against its background.

When extraction is the wrong tool

If the goal is to match an existing brand system, sample the brand file rather than a random photo. If the goal is a full design system, extraction gives you hues but not the tints, shades, spacing or semantic roles you actually need. Use it to inform a decision, not to make one.

Quick tips

  • Use 4-6 colors for UI token handoff and 8 colors for richer moodboards.
  • The palette is sampled locally from a downscaled preview so large files stay fast.

Next step: turn a still photo into video

Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
