What you get from a JPG to PNG conversion
Converting JPG to PNG does not recover detail the JPG already threw away. What it does give you is a lossless container: re-saving that PNG, editing it, or exporting it again will not add a second round of compression artefacts. That is the reason people convert before annotation, before layering in a design tool, or before repeated export cycles.
The conversion runs in your browser through canvas. The file is decoded, drawn and re-encoded locally, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is retained anywhere.
When PNG is the better container
Screenshots of interfaces, diagrams, text-heavy slides and anything with flat colour blocks belong in PNG, because JPG turns sharp edges into fuzzy halos. Design handoff files belong in PNG for the same reason, and because you may later need an alpha channel that JPG cannot store at all.
If the final destination is a photographic gallery, a marketplace listing or an email attachment where size matters more than fidelity, staying in JPG is usually the smarter choice.
Limits worth knowing
A converted PNG will be noticeably larger than the source JPG. That is expected: PNG is lossless, so it stores far more information. If the file needs to be small, convert to WEBP instead of PNG, or run the result through the compressor.
Transparency cannot be added this way. A JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG you get back is fully opaque; use the transparent PNG maker if you need to knock out a background.
Quick tips
- Use PNG when you need crisp UI screenshots or assets that may need transparency later.
- The source image stays in your browser and is redrawn through canvas for export.
Next step: turn a still photo into video
Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
