How local video transcoding works
The converter runs ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Your video is read from disk into the page's memory, transcoded there, and handed back as a download. No file is uploaded, which matters for client footage and anything under NDA.
The trade-off is honest: a browser tab is far slower than a dedicated server, and very large files can exhaust memory. Keeping clips under roughly 200 MB is the practical ceiling for a smooth run on a typical laptop.
Choosing an output format
MP4 with H.264 is the safest choice. It plays in essentially every browser, phone, editor and social platform, and if a destination accepts only one format it is almost always this one. WEBM produces smaller files at comparable quality and is well supported on the web, but native players and older editing software may refuse it. MOV is worth exporting when a downstream tool or a client explicitly asks for it.
If the goal is a smaller file rather than a different container, check whether re-encoding at a lower resolution does more for you than changing format alone.
What to expect from the process
Conversion takes real time: expect minutes, not seconds, for a long clip. Keep the tab in the foreground, because browsers throttle background timers and the encoding can stall. Do not close the tab until the download appears, since the work is happening in it, not on a server.
Quick tips
- Shorter clips finish faster - keep files under ~200MB for smoother runs.
- Use MP4 for maximum compatibility; pick WEBM for smaller embeds.
- Powered by ffmpeg.wasm in your browser, so nothing leaves your device.
Next step: turn a still photo into video
Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
