What browser upscaling can and cannot do

This tool enlarges an image using the smoothing built into the browser's canvas renderer. That produces a clean, anti-aliased result and removes the hard blocky pixels you get from naive nearest-neighbour scaling, but it does not invent detail. Edges get soft rather than crisp, because there is no model predicting what the missing pixels should contain.

It is honest about being an interpolation, not a reconstruction, and it runs entirely offline in your browser.

When interpolation is good enough

For layout checks, quick mockups, slide decks and rough placement tests, smoothly upscaled images are perfectly adequate. They are also fine as an intermediate step when you plan to blur or composite the result anyway, because the softness disappears into the effect.

Two times enlargement is the sweet spot: it is large enough to be useful and small enough that browser memory stays comfortable. Four times and above is where canvases start to fail on mobile devices.

When you need a real upscaler

If the goal is to recover a face, sharpen text, or produce a genuinely higher-detail product image, interpolation will disappoint: the missing information does not exist in the file, so no scaling method can retrieve it. That requires a machine-learning upscaler running on a server or GPU.

For sources above roughly 4000 pixels, downscale first or pick a smaller factor; a large canvas can exhaust memory and produce a blank or partially drawn output.

Quick tips

  • 2x is safest for quality and browser memory.
  • For very large sources, resize down first or choose a smaller scale.

Next step: turn a still photo into video

Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
