Capturing a single frame
The tool seeks to the timestamp you choose, draws that frame to a canvas, and exports it as a PNG. Extracting the frame locally means the video is never uploaded, so you can pull reference frames from client footage or an unreleased cut without sending it anywhere.
PNG output is the right default here: a thumbnail is usually edited, annotated or composited afterwards, and a lossless starting point avoids baking in compression artefacts before you begin.
Choosing the timestamp
The best thumbnail frame is rarely the first one. Opening moments are often mid-motion, mid-blink or in transition from black. Scan a few seconds in and look for a frame where the subject is steady, the expression is readable, and the composition still carries the meaning of the clip.
For an intro or a reveal, one to three seconds in is a reliable starting range. For a moving subject, look for the brief moment of stillness between movements.
What this cannot give you
Frame extraction makes no creative decisions for you: it will not pick the best frame, add a title, or compose a cover layout. It gives you a clean still; the choice is still yours.
Quick tips
- Choose a second where the subject is steady for a sharper frame.
- For intros, 1-3 seconds often works best for thumbnails.
- Outputs stay in your browser for privacy.
Next step: turn a still photo into video
Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
