How the transparent background is produced
You pick the background colour in the image and set a tolerance. Every pixel close enough to that colour is made fully transparent; pixels outside the tolerance keep their original value. Because the comparison happens per pixel on your own device, the file is never uploaded and there is no server-side copy of the original.
This is a colour-keying approach, the same idea as a green screen. It is fast, predictable and completely free, and it gives you a hard alpha edge rather than a soft matte.
Where colour keying works well
Flat, uniform backgrounds are the ideal case: product shots on seamless white, scanned signatures, icons on a solid colour, screenshots with a plain page background, and simple logos. If the background is one colour and the subject does not contain that colour, the result is usually clean on the first try.
Raise the tolerance until the last specks of background disappear, then stop. Pushing it higher starts eating into the subject's edge and produces a bitten, uneven outline.
Where it will struggle
Photographs with gradients, shadows, textured walls or busy scenes will not key cleanly, because the background is many colours rather than one. Hair, fur, foliage and motion-blurred edges also resist colour keying, since their pixels are blends between subject and background.
For those cases a dedicated AI background remover that predicts a matte is the correct tool. If the subject itself contains the same colour as the background, reduce the tolerance or use a mask-based editor instead.
