What a favicon set actually needs
A browser tab shows your site at 16 by 16 pixels, and a phone home screen shows it at 180 by 180. That is an enormous range, and a single file cannot serve both well. This tool generates the standard ladder from one source image: favicon.ico for legacy browsers and bookmarks, plus PNG icons at the common sizes modern browsers and install prompts request.
The resizing is done by your browser's canvas, so a pre-launch logo never leaves your machine.
Designing a mark that survives at 16 pixels
Fine detail disappears at tab size. A logo that reads well on a business card will often become mud at 16 pixels. Use a square source, crop tight to the mark, and favour strong contrast between the symbol and the background. Single letterforms, simple geometric shapes and bold outlines survive; thin strokes, small text and gradients do not.
If your logo has a wide wordmark, generate a square icon-only version for the favicon rather than shrinking the full lockup.
Limits of this approach
These are scaled versions of one flat image, not hand-tuned artwork. If a 16 pixel icon comes out ambiguous, no amount of scaling will fix it; the mark needs redrawing at that size. Multi-resolution ICO output and vector SVG icons are also beyond what a canvas-based converter produces.
For production sites, keep the generated set as a baseline and consider a purpose-drawn 16 pixel icon when the tab appearance genuinely matters.
