What compression actually costs you

Compression trades file size against fidelity, and the quality slider is the dial between them. At quality 90 most photographs are visually indistinguishable from the original; at 60 they are noticeably softer but still fine for a review thread or an internal doc. The important thing is to choose a target based on where the image is going, not to max the slider out of habit.

The compression is performed by your browser, so large or sensitive images are never transmitted.

Choosing a quality and a max width

For screenshots, diagrams and documentation, quality 75-85 is usually plenty, because the content is flat and text edges survive well. For photographs posted to a gallery or used as a source for animation, stay at 85 or above. Dropping below 70 on a photographic source introduces blocking that becomes visible once the image is enlarged or used as a video reference frame.

Max width often matters more than quality. A 4000 pixel screenshot displayed at 1200 pixels is wasting three quarters of its bytes; halving the width cuts the file to roughly a quarter before any compression is applied.

What to watch for

Compression is lossy and cumulative. Saving, editing, re-saving and re-compressing repeatedly degrades an image far more than a single pass at a slightly lower quality would. Always compress from the original, never from a previously compressed copy.

If the file must stay small and the image has text or sharp edges, consider converting to PNG instead; lossless compression handles those cases better than a low-quality JPG.

Quick tips

  • Quality 70-80 is usually enough for review links and docs.
  • Set a max width to slim down oversized screenshots or product stills.
  • Everything stays inside your browser.

Next step: turn a still photo into video

Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
