What resizing does to an image

Resizing interpolates: the browser computes new pixels from the ones that already exist. Enlarging therefore cannot create detail that was never captured, and a small image blown up to a large frame will look soft. Reducing size, on the other hand, is usually beneficial: it discards information that would have been thrown away at display time anyway, resulting in a smaller file with no visible penalty.

The resize runs on a canvas inside your browser, which keeps large and private images off the network entirely.

Keeping or breaking the aspect ratio

Lock the ratio for nearly everything: product photos, screenshots, portraits, social images. Stretching an image by setting width and height independently distorts faces and text in a way viewers notice immediately even when they cannot say why.

Break the ratio deliberately when the destination demands exact dimensions and you accept the distortion, or better, crop first to the target ratio and then resize. That way nothing ends up squashed.

Order of operations

When a file needs to be both smaller in dimensions and smaller in bytes, resize first and compress second. Compressing first wastes effort on pixels you are about to remove, and it compounds the compression loss. Resize, then compress the result, then compare the file size before deciding whether more compression is needed.

Quick tips

  • Keep aspect ratio on for most product and social images.
  • Resize before compressing when the source file is oversized.

Next step: turn a still photo into video

Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
