Fixing orientation without an editor

Phone cameras store orientation in metadata rather than rotating the pixels. Most software honours that flag, so the photo looks upright; a handful of upload fields and older applications ignore it, and the same photo arrives sideways. Rotating and re-exporting here bakes the orientation into the actual pixel data, which fixes the problem permanently for every consumer of the file.

The rotation happens on your device via canvas, so the original never leaves your machine.

Rotate or flip

Rotate in 90-degree steps when the image is simply turned the wrong way, which is the common case for phone photos and scanned documents. Flip horizontally only when the image is genuinely mirrored, which happens with some front-facing camera captures and with scans taken through the back of a sheet.

Do not flip to fix orientation. A mirrored face, a backwards logo or reversed text is far more jarring than a sideways image, and it is easy to ship without noticing on a small preview.

Quality considerations

Rotation itself is lossless if you export as PNG. Exporting as JPG re-encodes the whole image, so repeated rotations accumulate compression loss. Rotate once, from the original, and keep that result rather than rotating the same file repeatedly.

Quick tips

  • Use 90-degree steps for phone photos with wrong orientation.
  • Flip only when the subject or text is mirrored.

Next step: turn a still photo into video

Everything above runs in your browser and costs nothing. When the file is ready, Animate AI takes over: upload one photo, pick a motion preset, and get a short video back. Credits are prepaid, so you see the exact price before you start.
